The Georgia Department of Public Health has confirmed a resident tested positive for West Nile Virus in Ben Hill County, and a horse recently tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis in Lowndes County.

Public Health Inspector Stephanie Carlisle says this is usually the time of year many communities will find mosquitoes carrying the virus.

This comes after three mosquito pools and a bird tested positive for the virus earlier this summer.

"It is very important that people take precautions to protect themselves and their families from mosquito bites", advises Dr. Vaishampayan.

"We had a warm winter, we've had a cool, wet summer, and all that contributes to the possible- kind of flawless storm for West Nile virus in southern Ontario this year".

"We will continue to do increased spraying until lab results come back negative to ensure that West Nile is no longer in the area", Boudreaux said. Use a repellent with DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), permethrin, picaridin (KBR 3023), IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] according to the instructions on the product label. Otherwise, take extra care to use repellent and protective clothing. However, in the coming weeks, as floodwaters recede and form pools of stagnant standing water, the new pools may become breeding areas for the Aedes aegypti mosquitos that carry and spread the viruses.
