Earlier this week, North Korea warned Britain "faces a miserable end" if it takes part in US and South Korean military exercises in the region. "That's why we will be working with our worldwide partners - as we have done previously but we will be doubling our efforts with our global partners to put pressure on North Korea to stop these illegal activities".

We have also requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.

She will meet Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Kyoto before traveling to Tokyo for an investment conference and banquet.

"What they will discuss in private I can't pre-empt, but that is our position and she'll be setting that out if he (Abe) asks", the spokeswoman said. It is an important longstanding relationship between the United Kingdom and Japan.

Mrs May is expected to use the trip to reiterate the UK's commitment to a swift conclusion of the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement.

"You know, even contemplating an idea of new sanctions while we have just adopted the resolution on August 5, devalues the idea itself".
