In an interview ahead of Samsung's Galaxy Note phone launch, DJ Koh, the president of Samsung's mobile division, said a smart speaker is on the way.

The latest Bixby Voice update allows Galaxy S8 series owners to perform nearly every task, even conventional touch gesture commands, on their phone using just the voice.

Now supported in the U.K., Canada, Australia, South Africa, and many other countries in addition to the U.S. and South Korea, Bixby currently works only in Korean and U.S. English. Recognition of personal preferences will increase as time goes by, the company said.

Some of these companies have moved beyond smartphones as far as the use of artificial intelligence-based digital assistants is concerned. For example, users who want to combine turning on the do-not-disturb mode, setting a 6 a.m. alarm and activating their phones' blue light filters can configure Bixby to do all of those things with a simple "good night".

At one point, two demonstrators actually climbed up on the council members' desk to unfurl a banner which read "Blood on Your Hands".

It also has natural language understanding that will allow cross-application commands such as "send the picture just taken to mom".

Bixby is Samsung's answer to Amazon Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant. Bixby's deep integration is also built into the smartphone settings so that you can change phone options- such as setting the screen timeout or showing all notifications- without interrupting what you are now doing.

Samsung does have the benefit of integrating Bixby into its own devices with its flagship phone having a dedicated Bixby button. The digital assistant understands only two languages, Korean and English.

Bixby is now available in US English and in Korean.
