Gazing at 1963 eclipse for just 20 seconds partially blinded OR man

A Portland man who watched a solar eclipse in 1963 says the experience left him partially blind in one eye and now he wants everyone to know the warnings about eye damage during the upcoming eclipse are no joke

It's nearly time for the Northern Hemisphere to watch the skies go dark and see the solar eclipse unfold on August 21.

However, after looking at the eclipse without proper eclipse glasses for a few seconds, both experienced seeing flashes of light much like what one would see when a photograph is taken.

"The sun at that time, at 3:30 p.m., was in the one o'clock position", said Tomososki. "That's what I have on the right eye, about the size of a pea, I can't see around that".

While he was walking home, Tomososki said there was a bit of a blurry spot in his vision, but it wasn't until months later that he learned he burned a hole in his retina during a visit to the eye doctor.

Tomososki and a friend believed that if they stared at the sun long enough to view the eclipse, the brightness would go away. If the sun hits the front of your eye, it can cause solar keratitis. He said the vision problems never got any worse - but they also never got any better.

Democrats Call for Chappelle-Nadal's Resignation
Sen. "No, I don't want to see anyone assassinated, but he should not be president, he should be impeached", she told KMOV . She also said she was frustrated with the president's response to the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville.

"I'm going to go out and enjoy it".

"There's no sign that your eye is being damaged", he told Inside Edition.

Tomososki's condition is called a solar retinopathy, or damage to the retina that happens when you look directly at the sun. However, with the solar eclipse, even when the sunlight is reduced by the moon, infrared and UV rays can still cause severe damage to the retina. "There are serious risks associated with viewing a solar eclipse directly, even when using solar filter glasses", OH optometrist Michael Schecter said on Facebook. "Unfortunately there's not a treatment for it, so once that damage is done you have to wait and hopefully things improve and your body can heal some, but a lot of damage can be permanent".

With Monday's total solar eclipse on the horizon, he wants you to remember that even a quick look at the sun with the naked eye just isn't worth it. "A lot of the damage can be permanent". In fact, even those who have already bought their eclipse glasses are still warned to check if they are safe and certified. Van Gelder told TODAY when the disc of the moon covers the sun and corona of the sun is visible, it is safe to look at it.

In 1962, Lou Tomososki was excited to witness the eclipse after learning about it from his science teacher. You might be giving those silly looking glasses the side-eye, wondering if you really, actually need to wear them during your eclipse-viewing extravaganza on August 21.
