No apology from Fox in its battle with The New York Times

Fox News Channel on Monday clarified, but didn't apologize for, a weekend segment that The New York Times said falsely accused the newspaper of revealing intelligence information that enabled Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi to elude capture by us forces two years ago. "Unfortunately, it was leaked in a prominent national newspaper about a week later and that lead went dead", Thomas said.

The controversy took on extra weight when Trump, a devoted Fox and Friends viewer, tweeted on Saturday, "The Failing New York Times foiled US attempt to kill the single most wanted terrorist, Al-Baghdadi [sic].Their sick agenda over National Security". "Their sick agenda over National Security", Trump wrote in one of a barrage of early morning tweets. The Times story could not have possibly affected the raid, she noted in the statement, because "in fact the raid against Abu Sayyaf occurred on May 16, 2015 and was announced that day in an official statement by Defense Secretary Ash Carter".

In response, Fox News late on Sunday published an update to a story on its website and acknowledged the change in a brief "Fox & Friends" segment Monday morning. President Donald Trump comments on the "Fox & Friends" segment in a tweet on Saturday.

In a statement Monday evening, a Fox News spokesperson hit back, saying, "Neither Fox News' report nor the subsequent on-air coverage was inaccurate". Several media outlets reported about it at the time, including the Times and Fox News.

Considering Herridge had said in her 2015 report that intelligence gathered in the raid could lead the US closer to al-Baghdadi, through that logic Fox itself was unpatriotic, she said. Fox's report was based on an interview with General Tony Thomas, the commander of United States Special Operations Command.

Fox News parried: "For all of their hyperventilating to the media about a correction, the New York Times didn't reach out to anyone at Fox News until Sunday afternoon for a story that ran Friday night".

He passed semi-automatic, handgun, shotgun and taser qualifications and took a Super Bowl active shooter training course. Police said a squad auto entered an alley and Ruszczyk, 40, approached the driver's side to talk with the officers.

On Monday, "Fox & Friends" host Steve Doocy aired a portion of Thomas' remarks.

"Baghdadi would have known that Umm Sayyaf, Abu Sayyaf's wife, was being held, if not from his own communications network then from the Pentagon's announcement and news reports about that announcement", Rhoades-Ha continued.

If the US government wanted to keep the detention and likely interrogation of the wife secret, the Pentagon would not have publicly announced it, NYT said.

Both the updated article and the TV segment added part of a comment from The Times stating that the paper had described the piece to the Pentagon before publication and "they had no objections". The Times also said that "no senior American official complained publicly about the story until now, more than two years later". I don't know. But General Thomas, the head of all US special forces, believes that the Times article contained information that allowed al-Baghdadi to escape.

The dispute surfaced less than a week after Times television critic James Poniewozik said in a review of "Fox & Friends" that Trump was "the show's subject, its programmer, its publicist and its virtual fourth host".
