Hospital chairwoman Mary MacLeod said doctors and nurses have been subjected to abuse on the streets and have received thousands of threatening messages.

"Great Ormond Street Hospital is in close contact with the Metropolitan Police and we will do everything possible to hold to account anybody who involved in this kind of deplorable behaviour".

The hospital and Charlie's parents are in a legal battle to remove life support from the 11-month-old, who has a rare genetic disorder.

Charlie's parents, Connie Yates and Chris Gard, have been fighting the decision since the beginning - with support from Pope Francis and President Donald Trump.

His parents want to bring him to the United States for an experimental therapy, but the hospital has argued that every medical treatment option has already been considered and would not be in Charlie's best interest.

The family's plight has drawn many supporters who have stage noisy protests outside the court.

Next week, Charlie's parents will present evidence at London's High Court, provided it is new and relevant to the case, according to the AP.

Parents visiting their seriously unwell children have also been harassed, including on the grounds of the hospital itself, she said.

"However, in recent weeks the GOSH community has been subjected to a shocking and disgraceful tide of hostility and disturbance". Basically, the court is deliberating on whether Charlie's parents can be allowed to take him to USA for further treatment or not.

Charlie's parents have lost all previous court cases, including one before the European Court of Human Rights, which were created to force the hospital to let them bring their son to the United States for an experimental treatment.

Charlie Gard's parents have said they are "extremely upset" by the backlash they received after GOSH revealed the abuse its staff was suffering.

The hospital's constituency MP, Keir Starmer, said: "The abuse of staff at Great Ormond Street Hospital outside the hospital and online is totally unacceptable".

The case has garnered global attention and even drawn comment from President Donald Trump and Pope Francis.

American specialist, Michio Hirano, a professor of neurology at Columbia University Medical Centre in NY, travelled to London this week to examine Charlie for the first time and discuss the case with Great Ormond Street doctors.

A lawyer representing the hospital said in a brief hearing Friday that the latest brain scan results make for "sad reading".
