They said the Gujarat registered bus, which was attacked, reached at Jammu on July 7 and got registered at Amarnath shrine facilitation centre.

He also said his thoughts were with the injured and all those who lost loved ones in the attack.

As Indian officers responded, a bus carrying about 50 Hindu worshipers returning from a Himalayan cave shrine, as part of the annual Amarnath Yatra religious celebration, drove through the area, despite being unregistered and violating a vehicle curfew for the pilgrimage, The Atlantic reported.

The attack seems to be a reaction to a sustained counterinsurgency campaign launched by security forces against militants in recent weeks during which more than two dozen militants have been killed.

CPI national secretary D Raja asked the government to ensure the culprits of the "heinous and inhuman" attack do not go scot-free. "We know the direction in which the terrorists are hidden and we?ll hunt them down soon", a senior police Jammu and Kashmir police official told News18.

In the wake of Monday's terrorist attck on Amarnath pilgrims in the Valley, killing seven yatris, Citizens staged protest demonstrations at various places in the cit on Tuesday.

The leaders, Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik in a joint statement said, "people of Kashmir should be hailed for condemning killing of Amarnath yatris and rushing to provide aid and assistance to the injured in hospitals".

Twelve pilgrims were wounded in the fighting that was triggered after the militants attacked a police bunker and another police party at a checkpoint.

But on Wednesday, Union minister Jitendra Singh defended the state government's response to the attack and praised Mufti's handling of the situation. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has said that he will nominate Salim for a bravery award.

The central ministers stressed that the entire country was with the Kashmiris and the pilgrims and that all arrangements for a safe and secure pilgrimage would continue with renewed vigour. They had performed the yatra two days ago and had then moved to Srinagar.

Amarnath is one of the holiest shrines for Hindus, and is located at an altitude of 12,756 feet and surrounded by snowy mountain peaks.

The attack was carried out despite the deployment of a multi-layered security cover provided by almost 35,000 security men drawn from the Army, Central Reserve Police Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Sashastra Seema Bal and the state police. "The security forces also know that they have to restrain themselves more than ever before in the last 25 years".
