Virginia Blood Services issues urgent call for donors

Supplies of blood during the summer months are low and United Blood Services is in desperate need of donations right now.

Donations from O-negative donors, the universal blood type, are at almost half of the ideal quantity needed to support local patients.

In July alone, Virginia Blood Services is facing shortfall of several thousand donations, with deficits continuing through August.

The Australian Red Cross Blood Service in Toowoomba needs another 200 donors to give blood in the coming weeks, as winter takes its toll on national blood stocks.

The dedicated first responders, firefighters, policemen and sheriffs are challenging all New Mexicans to donate blood and help save lives. 10 3 p.m. The organization will be hosting blood drives throughout the state, including central Alabama. The agency says about 10 percent of people actually donate blood.

As part of Blood Systems Blood Services division, United Blood Services is included in a multi-state system of blood centers. Those relying on blood in the region receive that lifesaving blood from INBC. Donors should be 18 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional height/weight requirements apply to donors 23 and younger, and donors who are 16 and 17 must have signed UBS form/permission from a parent or guardian.
