Communion Bread Must Not Be Gluten-Free, Pope Says

RT reports that the Vatican rules that The Body of Christ, can not be gluten-free and that the blessed bread given to Catholics, must contain a small amount of gluten, while the wine must be made from unsoured grapes.

'Until recently it was certain religious communities who took care of baking the bread and making the wine for the celebration of the Eucharist, ' said the Vatican.

A letter was issued last month in which Cardinal Robert Sarah of the Vatican's Congregation for Divine Worship said guidance was needed in the area as many can now buy the bread on the internet.

Catholics with celiac disease who cannot even tolerate low-gluten bread can take wine only for Communion, even if the rest of the congregation only receives the bread.

Roman Catholics believe wine and bread served at the Eucharist are converted into the body and blood of Christ through a process known as transubstantiation.

In America and Europe, bread with trace amounts of gluten-about 20 parts per million-legally meets the definition "gluten-free".

China: US Has Apologized for 'Republic of China' Error
The Republic of China blunder calls to mind another memorable one back in 2006 when US President George W. The Republic of China flub was awkward for Beijing , which considers Taiwan part of its territory.

Specifically, breads/wafers may not be completely gluten free, derivatives of genetically modified organisms are allowed, no soured wines, and grape juice may be used if its fermentation has been suspended in ways that do not alter its nature.

"Bishops must also provide information to the producers of the bread and wine for the Eucharist and to remind them of the absolute respect that is due to the norms", it said. However, it seems that the Vatican has drawn a line when it comes to celebrating the Eucharist.

Everyone's favorite "cool Pope" isn't down with every new trend: if you're gluten-free, communion will continue to be hard for you.

The cardinal quoted from previously implemented instructions on the quality of the bread and wine used for the Communion sacrament. Since Holy Communion is for Christians an act of remembrance of Jesus' self-sacrifice, offering a gluten-free option of Jesus' body could seem disrespectful.

For the estimated one percent of the population with celiac disease, eating gluten - a protein found in grains such as wheat - causes intestinal damage.

"Medical certification of a condition justifying the use of mustum or low-gluten hosts for Holy Communion is not required".
