Tightening Cuban Relations Is Bad Policy and Bad for Democracy

First U.S. Flight Since 1959 Lands in Cuba

According to the Miami Herald, back in September, while at a campaign event in Miami, Trump told a crowd - which the Herald reports was heavily populated with Cuban exiles - that former President Barrack Obama's decision to ease trade and travel restrictions on Cuba hadn't benefitted the Cuban people and was misguided. Imposing new restrictions on trade and travel to Cuba is something that a majority of Cuban-Americans would frown upon. "Agricultural trade is an area where we can get the support we need to effect change in Cuba".

Educational trips and so-called "people-to-people" group exchanges will be under greater scrutiny, with educational groups once again having to travel with a guide from a United States organization sponsoring the trip, a requirement the Obama policy had effectively eliminated. Pence, who will also be accompanied by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, is expected to give the keynote speech at the event and remain in Miami through Trump's speech Friday.

Cuba's tobacco production can be compared to Napa Valley's wine culture - it's taken seriously, and some Cuban tobacco farmers have even gained income by hosting worldwide visitors, giving guided tours through the lovely countryside, and an inside look at how the cigars are produced. "We want to empower and we want to strengthen the Cuban people without strengthening the Cuban military, which controls a significant percentage of their economy", Rubio said. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said Thursday.

By rolling back Obama-era policies that allowed more private business investment in Cuba, President Trump would be leveraging the power of his office, like others who came before him, to shift Washington's approach to the communist island. After all, the damaging US trade embargo remains in place and they are struggling to get by as the economy wrestles with falling exports and a decline in oil shipments from key ally Venezuela.

During a November 2 appearance in Miami, Trump told supporters, "we will cancel Obama's one-sided Cuban deal made by executive order, if we do not get the deal we want, and the deal that people living in Cuba and here deserve".

Cuban diplomat Josefina Vidal told the Miami Herald more than 600,000 Americans visited the island previous year, a 34 percent jump from 2014.

Warriors' Green stays in Game 4 after technical foul fiasco
The technical foul was a weak one, and probably shouldn't have been called, but it was. Given the way the teams performed, though, it had real no influence on the outcome.

Some business groups, meanwhile, lobbied the Trump administration to keep the Obama rules in place, including hotel and airline interest seeking to expand business into the island.

The stated goal of the new policy is to cut down on human rights abuses.

Officials said the money which they infused into Cuba from U.S had increased the benefits of tourism and business deals.

Supporters of the embargo point to Cuba's poverty and poor human-rights record as reasons why agriculture groups should attach less importance to markets.

Reduced passenger traffic between the US and Cuba would harm major American corporations such as American Airlines, Carnival Cruise Line, Starwood, Airbnb, Expedia, Western Union, and AT&T, all of whom have an established foothold on the island. The Trump administration has made it clear that in its "America First" foreign policy, America's economic and security concerns will not be sacrificed in the name of human rights. But more important, it hurts us geostrategically.

The move marks yet another departure from a signature policy of the Obama administration, which ended a decades-long freeze of diplomatic ties with Cuba in 2014.
