Montana's Gianforte avoids jail time for reporter assault

"He has acknowledged the importance of the free press and made a thoughtful contribution to protect journalists around the world".

"This was not a proud moment, but I'm ready to move on", Gianforte said outside the courtroom. 'You were doing your job'.

Mr. Gianforte still won the seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Gianforte's actions "thrust me into a national spotlight I did not seek or desire", Jacobs said. He could have faced a maximum $500 fine or six months in jail.

Gianforte said he accepts the sentence, which kept him out of jail and allowed him to avoid having to take a booking photo.

Rep. Greg Gianforte (R-Mont.) received a light sentence Monday of community service, anger management classes and a fine.

"My intent was not to have you sit in jail", West told Gianforte. The Gallatin County Attorney does not oppose the motion.

After the attack, Jacobs said Gianforte then sent an "inflammatory public statement in which he insisted this unprovoked. attack was somehow my fault", Jacobs said.

The Gianforte campaign's initial statement the night of the encounter from spokesman Shane Scanlon blamed the 'aggressive behavior from a liberal journalist'.

Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs over claims that Gianforte knocked Jacobs to the ground when the reporter asked him a question May 24.

Gianforte also needs to admit and explain why his campaign lied.

Iran says arrests seven suspects linked to Tehran attacks
On Wednesday, five suspects were detained in the mausoleum but no further information has been provided about them, reports Efe. The ministry said the men had fought for IS in Mosul, Iraq, and Raqqa, Syria, before returning to Iran last August.

Lambert will respond and then the judge will rule. The last guy that came in here did the same thing! "You with the Guardian?".

West said the booking should occur, but Gianforte's attorneys objected, and will file a formal motion with the court later this summer to block any booking. According to Jacobs, he was "body slammed" to the floor, and his glasses were broken. "I'm excited to get to work".

The assault occurred at a campaign event in Bozeman on the evening before the May 25 election. In return, Jacobs pledged not to sue him. He noted that the sheriff's initial charge of misdemeanor assault was "spot on" because Jacobs was not seriously injured.

Whitney Bermes of the Bozeman Chronicle reported that Gianforte admitted to grabbing Jacobs' wrist during the court appearance.

Gianforte took questions from three reporters after his sentencing, where he made this statement. "I am sorry for what I did and the unwanted notoriety this has created for you".

Nearly immediately after the sentence was publicized, opposing political groups weighed in.

Nancy Keenan, executive director of the Montana Democratic Party, called for Gianforte to resign following his sentencing. Montanans said we need to drain the swamp ... and we have a lot of work to do.

Keenan said Gianforte's role would be minimized by Republican leaders and that he would not give the state adequate representation as a result.

In Montana it is unusual for someone - especially first-time offenders - to get any kind of significant jail time for misdemeanor crimes.

"Serving our fellow citizens as an elected leader should be one of the highest honors in our democracy".

Montana's newly elected congressman pleaded guilty today to assaulting a journalist.
