Devout Catholic Sean Spicer Excluded From Trump's Vatican Trip

Upon meeting this morning, the two were eventually joined by Trump's entourage, consisting of Melania, Ivanka and Jared Kushner - a moment that has since spawned quite a few memes. The Pope gave the president a copy of Laudato Si, an encyclical he wrote on the environment - a pointed gift, given that Mr Trump has threatened to withdraw the USA from the 2015 Paris accord on combating climate change.

Trump's visit to the Vatican has been met with a number of smaller protests.

He will then fly to Brussels for a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit.

He arrived in Europe from Israel and the Palestinian territories, where he vowed to try to achieve peace in the region.

Trump has never been one to let an insult, perceived or real, go by without a response, and he made no exception for the world's best-known religious leader.

Mr Trump, seeming subdued, said "it is a great honour".

The pope's other gifts could be taken as offering a more pointed message, though Francis is known to give them to other visitors, too.

The President then called on Italy's President Sergio Mattarella and met Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni briefly. Immediately after the meeting, the 80-year-old pope was due to give his usual midweek address to the faithful on St Peter's square while the Trump couple are given a private tour of the Sistine Chapel and St Peter's Basilica.

"I believe we can get them to be more successful in working with us to find a way of getting some of that information", she said. Britain is still looking for other suspects in the May 22 bombing at an Ariana Grande concert that killed 22 people.

"I think you will enjoy them", Trump told the pope.

But Francis is all about finding common ground.

"We can use peace", said the president, acknowledging the symbolism.

When Trump left, he told the pope: "Thank you, I won't forget what you said". Before Melania, British Prime Minister Theresa May and former United States first ladies Laura Bush and Michelle Obama opted not to wear one during their visits to the country.

Security has been stepped up across Rome, with the areas around the Vatican City, the Italian presidential palace and the American ambassador's residence, where Mr Trump is staying, temporarily closed to traffic. In Israel, Trump reaffirmed his commitment to strong ties with the longtime US ally and urged Israelis and the Palestinians to work harder toward peace.

He will fly to Brussels later in the day for a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit, and will wrap up his tour on Friday after the G7 summit on the Italian island of Sicily.
