GOP focus on lowering health premiums may undermine benefits

Republican lawmakers raised eyebrows when they voted to repeal and replace Obamacare without getting a final report on what their bill would cost from the Congressional Budget Office, or CBO.

The report, released Wednesday, estimates the GOP plan - the American Health Care Act - would increase the number of people without health insurance by 23 million in 2026 while reducing the federal deficit by $119 billion over the next decade.

"What are they thinking?"

The report said that under Obama's law, the nation's health insurance market is expected to remain "stable in most areas" because federal subsidies to millions of consumers largely rise with premiums. Not just those under Medicaid, which would include by and large a lot of people in nursing homes, Moms and Dads, Grandmothers, Grandfathers, but also that we're talking about increasing the cost of premiums?

"Leadership is going to spend this recess trying to develop a product [so] that we will have a base of a Senate bill, based on all these discussions, based on what the House did, based on the CBO score", he said. The CBO found that it would mean lower premiums for young, healthy people in those states, but that premiums could be unaffordable for people with pre-existing conditions.

Earlier this month the House of Representatives passed the American Health Care Act after updating it from a similar version which did not come to a vote in March.

This is just one of the effects that would lead, overall, to 51 million non-elderly Americans lacking health-care coverage in 2026, rather than the 28 million who would go without under current law. "But that's the goal". "We got to get premiums down and we got to make sure that people with pre-existing conditions can get affordable coverage".

Reformists sweep Tehran municipal vote as Rouhani wins Iran
Trump's remarks were his latest salvo against Iran since starting his first foreign trip after taking office. The Sunni kingdom and Shiite power Iran haven't had diplomatic relations since early 2016.

"There is still much work to be done, but the AHCA is a step towards providing Americans the freedom to choose health plans that are right for them at a cost they can afford, not plans forced on them by Washington bureaucrats", he added.

"When the ACA was passed, insurance companies could no longer dictate whether or not I would receive the care I needed", said Melissa Schmidbauer, who has Crohn's Disease. "No, actually what they're doing is their cutting about $890 billion of taxes only to the top income earners in America, the top couple percent", Quinlan said. There is, in fact, a line in the Congressional Budget Office report on the American Health Care Act that, at first glance, might suggest premiums will decline by 10 percent.

Carrying signs and chanting in opposition to the AHCA, Representatives from Planned Parenthood Advocates of OH, the Human Rights Campaign, the Universal Health Care Action Network and about two dozen speakers and protesters gathered outside the Scripps Building on Walnut downtown where Portman has an office. But according to Cramer, that doesn't matter, repealing and replacing a bad law like Obamacare, even if it is worse is a win because we said we were going to do it on the stump during election season.

Hardest hit by insurance losses would be low-income adults.

The long-awaited CBO "score" said the GOP's American Health Care Act would save federal funds by cutting deeply into Medicaid, which one report said covers up to one in five Americans, many of them children.

"Advisory to Republicans who support the replacement for Obamacare: Backing this bill could be very hazardous to your political health", said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.
