Since the first round of the election, Macron has accused Russia of meddling in his campaign with cyberattacks and has refused to accredit Russian media outlets RT and Sputnik, accusing them of issuing fake news stories.

Macron will name his prime minister next week, but could be forced to amend his choice if the legislative elections don't go to plan.

With 34 percent, Marine Le Pen nearly doubled her father's score.

Whilst the French public might not have fully embraced the National Front's brand of populism, the election results still mark the party's shift from a fringe force to a political heavyweight.

Macron was endorsed by the overwhelming majority of French politicians, many European leaders, and by former U.S. President Barack Obama. [NL8N1I90Y0] Pascal Gannat, an FN regional councilor, told France Bleu radio that Le Pen's anti-euro stance and her desire for France to quit the European Union were a "scarecrow" for both left-wing and right-wing voters. That fate befell conservative President Jacques Chirac when the left secured a majority in legislative elections in 1997, saddling him with Socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin for the next five years.

European Council President Donald Tusk congratulated the French people "for choosing Liberty, Equality and Fraternity over tyranny of fake news".

In the first protest against his policies, several thousand people demonstrated in Paris, chanting "anti-capitalists" as they marched through the capital. There were brief clashes with police and several arrests. "If he wants to continue the reckless policies of the past five years we will take to the streets to demonstrate". Overnight Sunday, police arrested 141 people in eastern Paris in clashes with masked protesters.

Russia, Syria blast U.S. strikes targeting anti-Daesh forces
U.S. and United Kingdom special forces have been training Syrian rebels at a heavily fortified base in al Tanf. When the Syrians insisted on proceeding into the area, the US planes were cleared to fire.

"We have seen a major decomposition of French political life, of the old political mainstream parties and what we see now is a real new configuration which is emerging between the patriots and the new liberals", Le Pen told supporters.

More congratulations rolled in from world leaders.

But one recent poll by OpinionWay-SLPV Analytics, for the Les Echos newspaper, projected that Macron's party would win the largest share - possibly a majority - of parliament's 577 seats.

"In these conditions it is especially important to overcome mutual mistrust and unite efforts to ensure global stability and security", Putin told Macron.

On the financial front, European stock markets edged down in early trading as investors had been widely expecting Macron's victory.

France's CAC 40 was 0.3% higher while the FTSE 100 was just fractionally up.

The euro fell from six-month highs against the dollar on confirmation of Macron's widely expected victory by a margin of 66 percent to 34 percent.
