Fidget spinner safety: Jacksonville doctor warns parents to monitor their child's usage

Useful tool or nuisance?

Useful tool or nuisance?

Fidget spinners have conquered classrooms and cubicles across America and Europe, and have now made their way to South Africa. However, we could find no reporting whatsoever of this incident, or any similar incident, in local or regional news media.

They are marketed as a stress reliever to help children with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) improve their concentration.

Mayra Mendez, Ph.D., a licensed psychotherapist and program coordinator for intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health services at Providence Saint John's Child and Family Development Center in Santa Monica, Calif., says that fidget spinners are a "fun toy" but acknowledges that there's really no science behind it.

Knight showed us just how easily the parts of the fidget spinner can pop off.

Then there will be nothing but peace and silence across the Middle East - just the whirrrrrr, whirrrrrr of the Fidget Spinner ball bearings, and the occasional, "Hey, Abu Omar, what colour did you get?"

Pope Francis turns two Portuguese shepherd children into Catholic saints
The bishop of Bataan meanwhile reminded the faithful of the three messages of the Virgin Mary to the shepherd children of Fatima. As the pope approached the sanctuary's chapel he presented the statue of Mary there with a bouquet of flowers.

"There's no peer reviewed evidence that it actually helps kids with ADHD or autism", he says.

Are schools right to ban them?

Because so many children struggle with ADHD, a lot of parents are searching for help and become vulnerable to false marketing, according to clinical psychologist and Duke University professor Scott Kollins, who talked with National Public Radio about fidget spinners recently. "It takes the focus off the lesson and onto the toy; and it becomes a distraction for every other child in the classroom as well".

But now, reports of children being injured by them are surfacing.

School districts in the tri-county area have not implemented any rules or regulations for fidget spinners.
