Merkel wants to rekindle European Union spark in first date with Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron is set to unveil his cabinet on Tuesday, a delicate balancing act for the centrist who has promised to include faces from the left and right as well as political newcomers.

President Emmanuel Macron rejected sharing existing euro-area debt among member states and pledged to implement economic reform in his home country as he sought to revive the French-German partnership during his first official meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The 39-year-old centrist leader laid out his ambitious plans as he took power on Sunday, promising to restore France's shattered self-confidence and help rebuild the flagging European Union.

After years of strained relations between France and Germany, Macron wants to reset the partnership to improve growth across the region and counter the populist fervor that triggered the U.K.'s exit from the European Union, helped Marine Le Pen achieve the strongest-ever election result for France's National Front party this month and powered the campaign of Geert Wilders in the Netherlands in March.

Macron has shaken up French politics with his meteoric rise to the presidency. Mr Macron needs a majority or at least enough seats in Parliament to govern or form a coalition.

Philippe, a little known 46-year-old MP and mayor of the northern port of Le Havre, comes from the moderate wing of the right-wing Republicans party and is seen as a pragmatist.

French President Emmanuel Macron said that the possibility of change to European Union treaties was "not taboo" and that he wanted to see better protection for Europe's workers.

The euro's rally was reinforced by dollar losses prompted by allegations that US President Donald Trump disclosed highly classified information to Russia's foreign minister about a planned Islamic State operation.

Senior US officials told AFP that the internationalist Macron and protectionist Trump would have a "lengthy lunch" on May 25 to "compare perspectives".

Wolfgang Ischinger, chairman of the Munich Security Conference, pushed back against German politicians who have picked holes in Macron's ideas for Europe.

He said: "Regarding financial issues probably we need a finance ministry, probably we need a eurozone budget, we need things like that and it is in Macron's project and I agree with that".

Germany, which has Europe's biggest economy, has vehemently opposed taking direct responsibility for weaker eurozone countries' debts.

Olivier Ihl, an academic from the Grenoble Institute of Political Studies, said the visit was "an important moment because he wants to relaunch Franco-German cooperation in a Europe that is on its knees".

Macron was sworn-in as President after his landslide victory over far-right National Front leader Marine le Pen, with 66 per cent of the vote in the run-off poll held on May 7.

Macron, France's youngest ever president, took over from Hollande at the Elysee Palace a week after his resounding win in an election that was closely followed worldwide. "Macron!" and waving European flags.

But she insisted that "the national election campaign is only beginning now".
