Trump reportedly asked Comey to drop Flynn investigation

Comey, who was known to keep a paper trail of sensitive meetings, chronicled the president's request soon after the February Oval Office meeting with the president, an associate who has seen the memo told The Associated Press. The White House initially said that Mr Trump made his decision based up on the counsel of the Justice Department but the President later said on national television that he had considered the Russian Federation investigation when deciding if he wanted to fire Mr Comey and that he would have fired him with or without the advice of the Justice Department to do so.

"I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go", Trump told Comey, according to a memo reported about by the Times. "He is a good guy". 'I hope you can let this go'.

A memo of that sort would be consistent with a practice Comey is known to have established earlier in his career of writing memos to document incidents that he found noteworthy or disturbing.

"While the president has repeatedly expressed his view that Gen. Flynn is a decent man who served and protected our country, the president has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving Gen. Flynn", the statement said.

'The President has the utmost respect for our law enforcement agencies, and all investigations.

Mr Comey was sacked as FBI Director last week.

Trump fired Comey last week.

The memo is evidently part of a larger rumored paper trail the Times says Comey created to document Trump's alleged interference with the FBI's Russian Federation investigation.

Comey created similar memos, including some that are classified, about every phone call and meeting he had with the president, the two people said.

The panel's top Democrat, Elijah Cummings of Maryland, a constant Trump critic, called the allegation of Trump pressure on Comey "explosive" and said "it appears like a textbook case of criminal obstruction of justice".

Like Macron, Edouard Philippe is a pro-European moderate who wants French politics to go beyond the left-right divide. The two have met before, in March, during the French presidential campaign.

Trump was apparently referring to the FBI's ongoing counterintelligence inquiry into possible collusion between Trump campaign associates - including Flynn - and Russian officials seeking to influence the presidential election.

Trump wrote to Comey that the dismissal was necessary to restore public trust and confidence. He denies it had anything to do with the Russian Federation investigation, but also says: "In fact when I made a decision to just do it, I said to myself, I said you know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story".

May 11, 2017: Trump, in an NBC interview, says he had been intending to fire Comey - whom he derided as a "showboat" and "grandstander" - for months. He refused, however, to say whether Trump had discussed making such revelations beforehand with either McMaster or Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Comey kept his own log of all his discussions with Trump because he was suspicious of the president's motives, according to the source.

November 6, 2016: Comey tells Congress in a follow-up letter that a review of newly discovered Clinton emails has "not changed our conclusions" that she should not face criminal charges.

And while Comey himself has been silent, his associates have been exposing intriguing details of his encounters with Trump.

After writing up a memo that outlined the meeting, Comey shared it with senior Federal Bureau of Investigation officials. At that dinner, on January 27, Trump asked Comey at least two times for a pledge of loyalty, which Comey declined, according to one of Comey's associates.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, sent a letter Tuesday evening to McCabe requesting all "memoranda, notes, summaries, and recordings referring or relating" to communications between Comey and Trump.

Flynn is a retired general who became a prominent Trump supporter and surrogate during the campaign.

The turmoil overshadowed Republican legislative priorities such as healthcare and tax reform and laid bare sharp divisions between the White House and USA intelligence agencies, which concluded late a year ago that Russian Federation had tried to influence the 2016 presidential election in Trump's favor.
