Ricciardo's lonely podium in Spain after Verstappen crashes out

Lewis Hamilton has reduced his driver's championship deficit to Sebastian Vettel to just six points after claiming a memorable victory at the Spanish Grand Prix. "I don't know how we managed to lose that", said Vettel, who made the most of Hamilton's poor start.

The two men, with seven world championships between them, fought a wheel-to-wheel duel in Spain on Sunday with Hamilton emerging the victor and now six points behind the German.

"Good as Hamilton's drive was - undoubtedly one of his very best - he could not have done it without a superb collective effort from Mercedes team, from head of strategy James Vowles and Hamilton's engineer Peter Bonnington on the pit wall to his team-mate Valtteri Bottas".

Indeed, in the ante room, while Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo stood and re-lived the race, Hamilton quickly slumped on to a sofa.

The hard compound Pirelli-supplied tyre proved too hard to be of any use at the track and the differential between the medium and the soft was much higher than usual. And with the combination of a tow and DRS he sailed around the outside of Vettel at turn one to reclaim the lead he had lost at the start.

Hamilton would be on the faster soft tyres and Vettel on mediums.

That is until Stoffel Vandoorne beached his McLaren in the gravel after contact with Felipe Massa.

"I didn't want him to win today; I wanted to win", he said.

Khazri was lucky not to suffer worse punishment when referee Andre Marriner booked him for what looked like a stamp on Sigurdsson. The mutinous mood grew stronger once an increasingly fluent six-man passing move concluded with Swansea doubling their lead.

It is also Hamilton's 55th career victory.

"He came out of the pits and I was a bit surprised that it was so close".

"I think he's afraid of me, man!".

Hamilton would have had to leave his challenge until late if not for some assistance from teammate Valtteri Bottas, who held up Vettel before the Finn's Mercedes broke down in a puff of smoke. It was really close, I faked it on the inside, went back on the outside and then on the inside to surprise him which worked but I almost lost the vehicle doing that because I had the DRS open and it was quite an aggressive move on the steering wheel.

Earlier in the race Raikkonen and Verstappen retired after a coming together on the first lap, and it was Force India filling the gap with fourth and fifth for Perez and Ocon respectively.

"I was doing everything I could to stay in front, but as soon as I was alone he just flew past me down the straight, which was a shame".

"We tried to stay in the race but well done to him, he drove a good race and we did everything we could".

"The majority of races we do, you get into the first stint, you realise you're second, so you have to back off, save your tyres, so you're driving at 80 percent, so you have loads of energy", he told United Kingdom broadcasters Channel 4.
