Firefighters put out the three-alarm fire on Sunday

Agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives were at the scene to join the investigation on Monday, because, "Somehow this fire started in a building that isn't being used", explained FDNY Manhattan Borough Commander Roger Sakowich.

More than 100 firefighters fought for hours to bring the flames under control while spectators talked about the gorgeous interiors of the synagogue.

The Synogogue is located on Norfolk Street in the Lower East Side neighbourhood of Manhattan, close to New York's Chinatown.

Surveillance video shows three young people running away from the area near the historic NY synagogue that caught fire Sunday and largely destroyed the building, according to police.

The fire that tore through a historic Lower East Side synagogue Sunday night was deliberately set, according to the NYPD's Chief of Detectives.

Arsenal keep the pressure on Liverpool in Champions League race
However, should Arsenal win their game in hand and Liverpool slip up in their remaining two matches, a final play-could be needed. Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says he sees no honour or prestige in finishing in the top four of the Premier League.

Three people were seen on a surveillance video running from the building, which had been abandoned for a decade, according to reports. "We are in touch with law enforcement, who are actively investigating the blaze, and we will continue to monitor the situation as it proceeds".

The Gothic structure was originally built in 1850 as a Baptist church, and was landmarked by the city in 1967. It was home to Beth Hamedrash Hagodol for over 120 until the congregation closed in 2007.

In recent years, the building was in poor condition.

But Rabbi Mendl Greenbaum of Beth Hamedrash Hagadol told the Lo-Down that he was due to meet with the LPC soon about restoration plans for the building.
