Wall's late 3 leads Wiz past Celtics 92-91, forces Game 7

As the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards headed into the fourth quarter of Friday's tightly-contested Game 6 matchup, both teams turned to their starting backcourts to carry them home.

Wall overcame a poor shooting performance (1-of-9 from the field in the first half, 9-of-25 overall) to hit the go-ahead shot over Celtics guard Avery Bradley, who had hounded him for much of the night. Wall finished with 26 points, Beal scored a game-high 33, and they combined for 23 of Washington's 26 points in the back-and-forth fourth quarter.

Thomas scored five straight points to put Boston up 87-82 with 94 seconds remaining.

Isaiah Thomas scored 27 points for the Celtics but missed a final 3-point attempt at the buzzer. He and Avery Bradley each had 27 points.

Seconds later, Wall used his incredible recall to rearrange his teammates to stop a Celtics backdoor lob play that got them two years prior.

The Celtics will be absolutely kicking themselves that they weren't able to come away with the win in Game 6 but they'll have to regroup in a hurry to avoid losing the series altogether.

Wall's game-winning shot last night allowed the Wizards to go further than they have in 38 years.

NOTES: Game 7 is slated to start at 8 p.m.

Lopsided results had dominated this first postseason series between Boston and Washington since 1984, with each game decided by at least 10 points. He took three dribbles - the first two advanced the ball forward, the third was between the legs for misdirection purposes - then he shot, and made, his first 3-pointer of the night, which brought the Wizards within two points with 1:09 left in the game.

The outcome of all six games has hinged upon the success of both teams' respective backcourts.

But it was the big-name guards who made the big plays in the final minutes.

Game 1 was played the day after the funeral of Thomas' sister, Chyna, who was killed in a auto accident in mid-April in their home state of Washington. Moments later, Wall hit two free throws to tie the game at 87. "To get on the scorer's table is for how much love I have for this city, how much love I have for my teammates, how much fight we have and never quitting".

Boston will have home advantage in Monday's decider, with the Cleveland Cavaliers awaiting the winners of the TD Garden clash.

Now the Wizards head to a place they're not supposed to be: one game from the Conference Finals. But Boston's Marcus Smart disrupted Beal's path around a Marcin Gortat pick, leaving inbounds passer Otto Porter standing helplessly along the sideline with the ball in his hands and the five second count ticking perilously low.

But Bradley could do nothing defensively to stop Wall on the winning shot, coming off an inbound play that was created to get Beal the ball.

"We knew it was kind of a copycat of what we did", he said. "That's where all the great players make their name; that's where legends are born".

It has been an ugly series and the bad blood between the two teams dates back tot he regular season. "If we didn't get to a Game 7, it would have felt like a failure", Wall said. I'm excited. We couldn't take care of business tonight, an unbelievable shot by John Wall. "I just wanted the city to know that we love them for all the support they give us".
