If Cornyn Picked to Replace Comey, Senate Would be in Disarray

According to a new poll by the Wall Street Journal and NBC, only 29 percent of people approve of the president's decision to fire Director Comey. But when Fox News broke a short list of people who would be interviewing for the job with Cornyn on it, the speculation broke in two ways.

These included his confirmation votes in favor of Betsy DeVos and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, his opposition to funding for so-called sanctuary cities that protect immigrants, his opposition to same-sex marriage, and his support for photo IDs for voting.

"I talked to Senator Cornyn on Friday morning, and he had been contacted directly by President Trump to talk about a number of Federal Bureau of Investigation director candidates including himself", said Ratcliffe, who added Cornyn told him he had not decided if he would pursue the position.

Cornyn is not scheduled to run for re-election until 2020, meaning there would be three years left on his term up for grabs.

"I think the process is going to go quickly".

Since March 2011, the Syrian conflict has caused more than 320,000 deaths and forced millions of refugees to flee. According to the State Department, they will discuss ongoing conflicts in Syria and Ukraine.

While Cornyn is one of the more popular members of the Senate GOP Conference, a number of his colleagues are skeptical that he would be the right choice for the job, anxious that such a pick would be viewed as too political at a time when many critics are questioning whether Comey was sacked to slow-walk the FBI's investigation into alleged Russian coordination with the Trump campaign during last year's elections. The Texan's seat is safe for as long as he wants it but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky is gearing up for reelection in 2020 and has shown no signs of giving up the top leadership post, meaning Cornyn could be waiting almost a decade for a shot at the top job.

And Trump is eager to get a director confirmed quickly to help put the Russian Federation investigation out of the headlines. Graham argued that this was a bad time for the White House to pick any nominee, no matter how qualified, if they were to come with partisan political baggage. "But these are not normal circumstances".

Schumer also said he supports calls to block a nomination until a special prosecutor is appointed to take over the investigation.

McCabe on Thursday contradicted the Trump White House when he called the probe into the possible Russian meddling in the USA election as "a highly significant investigation" and commented that Comey still "enjoyed broad support within the FBI".

Cornyn has in recent weeks become more of an outward defender of Trump. That would seemingly rule out Gowdy and Rogers (which would put Graham at odds with the FBI Agents Association, which last week endorsed the latter).
