Trump, a Republican supported by Liberty's President Jerry Falwell Jr., will speak at the school's commencement Saturday, and the Seven Hills Progressive Society plans to demonstrate its distaste across the busy Wards Road.

"Be totally unafraid to challenge entrenched interests and failed power structures", the President said.

President Trump suggested on Twitter Friday morning there might be recordings of his private conversations with former FBI Director James Comey, whom he fired earlier this week, in an apparent attempt to caution Comey against "leaking to the press".

The president has stayed largely out of public view since Tuesday, when he removed the head of the agency that is investigating Russia's role in the 2016 election, along with possible ties between Mr Trump's campaign and the Russian government.

USA presidents are often invited to speak at the University of Notre Dame during the first year of their term, but the idea of Trump speaking there has sparked protests.

"Then ask yourself, with all of those blessings and all the blessings you've been given, what will you give back to this country and indeed to the world?".

Mr. Trump has said his administration is working every single day to create new opportunities and to reverse years of stagnant growth, falling wages, and disappearing jobs.

But at Liberty, he continued, "we're just so honored as a university to have a sitting USA president do his first commencement speech at Liberty". While he's been to campus before, this is Trump's first trip as President and while we don't know what he'll say, many are excited.

"As long as I am president, no one is ever going to stop you from practicing your faith or preaching what's in your heart", Trump said.

Trump told graduates to "treat the word "impossible" as nothing more than motivation" and to embrace being called an "outsider" because "It's the outsiders who change the world".

Trump, who received an honorary law degree at Liberty's commencement, said he was making good on his promises, pointing to the signing of an executive order earlier this month that directed the IRS to limit enforcement of the ban on pastors endorsing politicians from the pulpit.

"You are about the begin the greatest adventure of your life", the president told graduates. Nothing is easier or more pathetic than being a critic, because they can't get it done. "I think I did, but we all did, and we're all doing it".

"You aren't going to let people tell you what to believe, especially when you know that you're right", Trump told the graduates lining the football field and the guests seated in the stadium, a total of 50,000 in attendance. Did we dare to defy expectations? President George H.W. Bush spoke at Liberty's commencement in May 1990.

But the majority of his speech was devoted to lofty rhetoric about challenging a "broken system" and persevering in the "critics and doubters". The White House will dispatch Vice President Mike Pence to the Notre Dame commencement next Sunday.
