Sean Spicer under fire during crucial week for Trump

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Friday that it's not always possible to provide entirely accurate information at press briefings given President Trump's busy schedule. A new report indicates Trump may replace Spicer with Fox News' Kimberly Guilfoyle, which is a possibility that's been being floated for months. Journalists raced to Press Secretary Sean Spicer's office to confirm the news, prompting him to read the statement out loud before disappearing into his office.

Explaining his decision, Trump said: "James Comey will be replaced by someone who will do a far better job, bringing back the spirit and prestige of the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

Pressed by Pirro to respond to such rumors, Trump offered no assurances that Spicer is safe. "Unless I have them every two weeks and I do it myself. We don't have them".

And he suggested handing out written responses to the press in lieu of briefings "for the sake of accuracy".

Trump elaborated in the interview on why he was considering the move.

"I think it's pretty simple, I hadn't had a chance to have the conversation directly with the president", she said.

A White House official told CNN that officials at the highest levels, including the president, are monitoring Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders' performances as she substitutes for Spicer in the briefing room.

He was back Friday and joked that he heard he had been missed by the press. Andrew McCabe, Comey's standing successor, said the bureau would halt any further updates to the White House on the status of the inquiry.

Mr Spicer took a leave of absence from the daily press briefings over the next couple of days for Navy Reserve duty.

James Comey was sacked by US President Donald Trump on Tuesday.

In light of the flap over the Comey firing, President Trump said "yes, that's true" when Pirro suggested that his administration was "moving so quickly that your communications department can not keep up with you".

"The President reiterated his confidence in his press team earlier today", he told CNNMoney. "Doing away with the briefings would reduce accountability, transparency and the opportunity for Americans to see that, in the USA system, no political figure is above being questioned".

White House briefings and press conferences provide substantive and symbolic opportunities for journalists to pose questions to officials at the highest levels of the U.S. government, he said.

WikiLeaks made its offer on its Twitter site Friday after Trump warned in a tweet that Comey had "better hope" that the president didn't have tapes of their dinner meeting. "That guy gets great ratings".
