Google's Project Treble Is A Modular Base For Android

Meanwhile, it has also been stated that Project Treble's updates will not be applicable to older devices, as it will be "coming to all new devices launched with Android O and beyond".

In addition to the architectural changes, Google is working with its partners to move their code changes into the common Android Open Source Project codebase.

The basic idea behind Project Treble is that Google is "re-architecting Android to make it easier, faster and less costly for manufacturers to update devices to a new version of Android". That's what Google is promising, anyway. "Project Treble" is a plan to modularise the Android OS, separating the OS framework code from "vendor specific" hardware code. If a device is tied to a carrier, such as AT&T or Verizon, the OS update must then make their way to those companies for final changes and testing.

This changes that, or so Google says, with Treble being its "biggest change yet to low-level system architecture".

Under the new system, Google is boiling those steps down to just one. For some of them, the fixes are only included in the binary files that chipset manufacturers share with device manufacturers and are not publicly available.

Carriers add more apps, more branding, and "test and certify the new release". VTS would ensure that better compatibility for the vendor implementation.

VTS is exactly like Compatibility Test Suit (CTS) that used to help the developers to develop new apps compatible with the Android OS and the hardware of their devices.

Google states that in current and previous versions of Android, any updates for the OS are first sent to silicon companies like Qualcomm, MediaTek and others, who make changes to the OS so it can work on their hardware.

Google's Project Treble is set to speed up the time it takes for your phone to get access to Android O, the upcoming release that's now confirmed for Summer. Steps two and three above will still be issues.

Project Treble lets device manufacturers focus only on the parts of Android that affect their phones.

In terms of what all is being fixed in the Android Security Bulletin for May 2017, Google made an announcement detailing all of the vulnerabilities we will see addressed.
