Residents are urged to place non-perishable food items next to their mailboxes for pickup on May 13 before their usual mail pickup time.

To donate food, please leave a bag of non-perishable food where the letter carrier delivers your mail, such as your mailbox.

Recommended items include peanut butter and jelly; hearty soups; canned chicken or tuna; canned fruit in juice; 100 percent fruit juice; canned vegetables; grains; iron rich cereal and whole grain cereal. Over the course of the 24-year history, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has collected well over one billion pounds of food. Items in glass containers and expired items won't be accepted.

You should have gotten a bag like this in the mail this week.

Penny Porter will be one of thousands of U.S. Postal carriers doing double duty Saturday, delivering mail and collecting food donations for the 25th annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. The food is distributed to local pantries in the communities where it's collected.

This year's Stamp Out Hunger day is on Saturday, May 13.

Syria says Israeli missile strike near Damascus airport confirmed
Hezbollah fought a war with Israel in 2006 and has been fighting in Syria as an ally of the government for several years. Arab media outlets are reporting that several missiles hit a Syrian airbase near the global airport in Damascus.

But for the 25th year in a row, food banks and postal workers are giving a hand to those in need.

They said the food left on the curb will make it's way to the bank and to all of their other pantries and they need your donations to continue running. Post Office Box patrons can leave their donations in their local post office lobby.

For any questions regarding the food drive go to nalc.org and click the "Community Service" tab followed by the "Food Drive Home Page" link on the right hand side of the screen.

For Union City and Sherwood, it's the same pickup arrangement with the letter carriers taking the collections to the local food pantry in Union City at the Our Savior Lutheran Church.

"We seem to do more food orders during the summertime and less food comes in during this food drive because people are so busy", Mortinger said. We hope you agree too and will help out Saturday.
