Kentucky Derby: Always Dreaming pulls away from field to win at Churchill Downs

Always Dreaming, ridden by John Velazquez, finishes first in the 143rd Kentucky Derby at Louisville's Churchill Downs. Always Dreaming took the lead coming around the backstretch and never looked back, leading the field down the stretch of the sloppy track in a time of 2:03.59.

This is the fifth straight year a favorite or co-favorite has won the Kentucky Derby.

As they turned for home, Always Dreaming was close to the rail and began to pull ahead to a comfortable margin.

Long shots Lookin at Lee and Battle of Midway were next across the line in slow conditions caused by rains Friday and Saturday. Velazquez, a Hall of Famer, won the 2011 Derby aboard Animal Kingdom while Pletcher was a Derby-winning trainer with Super Saver in 2010.

With two on and two outs in the seventh, Marquez broke open the game with his liner to left on an 0-2 pitch left up. Marquez finished with a Game Score of 88, which is the sixth-best mark in franchise history.

Looking at Lee finished in second place, Battle of Midway finished in third. "We had a great horse and the way he ran today, it was very impressive".

Patch, whose left eye was removed past year after an extreme inflammation, became a sentimental favorite, going from 30-1 in the early odds to 12-1 by race time before finishing 14th in the 20-horse field.

A total of 158,070 people attended the race, according to NBC, which broadcast the event.

Lookin at Lee, a 33-1 longshot, was second, 2 3/4 lengths back, in the first leg of US thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown series for three-year-olds. The Belmont Stakes in Elmont, New York, is June 10 at Belmont Park.
