US needs September 'shutdown' to fix Senate 'mess'

The budget deal will not provide any money for Trump's promised border wall with Mexico or deliver the funding cuts to sanctuary cities that Trump had threatened.

He said, "Our Republican team had its own victory, under the radar", and called the bill "a clear win for the American people".

Trump's embrace of a government shutdown came days after he accused Senate Democrats of seeking a shutdown and obstructing majority Republicans during recent budget negotiations.

Democrats are trying to "cover up the fact that they cut a deal with president Trump", he said, and wanted a government shutdown, but didn't get it. It includes more than $15 billion in new defense spending and $1.5 billion in money for USA border security, ahead of a deadline to keep the government open past Friday.

House Republican leaders say they are close on garnering the votes to scrap major parts of Democrat Barack Obama's health care law but that they are still short of the votes.

Mick Mulvaney, the White House budget director, told reporters Tuesday afternoon that the reason Trump floated the possibility of a shutdown was all because of Democrats' happiness at the spending deal.

Tuesday afternoon from the White House podium, Mr. Mulvaney defended the spending deal a third time, appearing with pictures of planned border-security changes he said would be funded by the deal and emphasizing to conservative critics of the deal that a Republican-only bill could not pass the Senate.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Sunday: "The bill ensures taxpayer dollars aren't used to fund an ineffective border wall".

OPEC is scheduled to meet on May 25 at its headquarters in Vienna, Austria, to decide whether to extend the cuts. It is set to be the fourth weekly fall on the trot for the greenback which is now at its lowest since November.

That prompted the White House to send Kelly and Mulvaney out to push back on Democrats' messaging.

Security costs for the Trump presidency are expected to far outstrip for his predecessor.

"We either elect more Republican Senators in 2018 or change the rules now to 51%", he continued. Our country needs a good "shutdown" in September to fix mess!

"Both sides agree, we have to keep government going, we don't want to shut government", Trump told Bloomberg News.

But hours earlier, he decried rules in the Senate that make it more hard to pass legislation and appeared to call for a government shutdown when lawmakers negotiate a new budget deal in the fall. I don't anticipate a shutdown in September.

Those employed in jobs ranging from National Parks to post offices are banned from working or receiving their pay during a shutdown.

Behind them were photos of a southern border wall, the main "ask" for the Trump administration during budget negotiations. Patty Murray, D-Wash., a ranking member of the appropriations committee. The spending bill also contains $1.5 billion for border security.

Throughout the day, the White House and congressional Republicans pressed to reverse a Washington narrative that the catchall bill is a win for Democrats.
