Syria says Israeli missile strike near Damascus airport confirmed

Damascus International Airport is reportedly a major conduit of Iranian arms bound for Hezbollah in Syria.

Arab media outlets are reporting that several missiles hit a Syrian airbase near the global airport in Damascus.

Israel previously has been accused of firing on Hezbollah position and Iran-backed armed shipments in Syria and Lebanon bound for terrorists.

The Syrian aircraft's penetration of Israeli airspace could trigger another military strike from Israel.

Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz on Thursday appeared to confirm reports that Israel was behind an overnight airstrike near the Damascus airport.

"When we receive serious information about the intention to transfer weapons to Hezbollah, we will act".

"The blast was huge and could be heard in Damascus", said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the group.

The Syrian government warned in January that it would retaliate against any attack targeting its own areas.

Lebanon's al-Manar television, which is affiliated with Hezbollah, said early indications were that the strikes hit warehouses and fuel tanks and had caused only material damage and no human casualties.

Israel has shot down "a target" over Golan Heights on the border with Syria, hours after it was accused of a missile strike at a military site near Damascus' worldwide airport.

Israel's Intelligence Minister has all but confirmed the Israeli Air Force was behind suspected airstrikes near Damascus airport that are believed to have hit a weapons depot used by Iranian-backed militia loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The IDF said that it would continue to respond to threats against Israelis, and would not tolerate any compromise of Israeli sovereignty.

The Patriot is a surface-to-air missile system and is designed, among other things, to intercept drones.

Hezbollah fought a war with Israel in 2006 and has been fighting in Syria as an ally of the government for several years.

Israeli media said residents in the northern Israeli town of Safed reported seeing two missiles being launched and of explosions occurring afterwards.

"When we identify attempts to transfer advanced weapons to Hezbollah and we have intelligence and it is operationally possible, we will act to stop it", said Netanyahu.

Syria has been embroiled in a civil war since 2011.

Israel has carried out similar attacks in the past.
