Man City thrash Palace to move into third place

A scintillating Manchester City trounced Crystal Palace at the Etihad to move up to third in the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City are the Premier League's most creative team, but the Spaniard warned his players to show a more ruthless streak despite their 5-0 rout of Crystal Palace.

On the other side, Manchester City are only a point up on their crosstown rivals Manchester United, with both teams in a heated battle for the fourth and last Champions League qualifying spot.

This was about as comfortable as it has been for City since Pep Guardiola took charge last summer.

"There are four wonderful teams fighting for the last two Champions League places", the Catalan boss said. It could have been 1-1 with the chances we carved out, so the recovery was good from a poor goal from our point of view.

Guardiola believes City would have been worthy champions this season had they been more clinical in front of goal.

"So it is a massive game for us all, and our players have to hold their nerve and produce a massive performance".

City captain Kompany said: "It was massive, and especially for the goal difference, winning 5-0". They have guys who score goals. The most hard thing in all the sports is to do it, in the last moment.

"We need a result against Hull next week and we need to get back to keeping clean sheets", he said. We created more chances here and at Stamford Bridge.

Those days are long gone - their title hopes were officially ended by last week's draw at Middlesbrough - but this win, which equalled their biggest of the season in all competitions, was a timely return to goalscoring form.

Silva nearly started the second half as he did the first as he turned well in the box to fire a shot at goal, but it was away to the right and never bothering Hennessey.

"The teams with the top quality players don't lose the ball in the opposition area".

Palace's third consecutive defeat means they are still anxiously looking over their shoulders at the teams below them although they remain six points above third-bottom Swansea City who are in action tomorrow at home to Everton.

"It was only 1-0 at the end of the first half, so it wasn't an easy game", he told Sky Sports.

Sam Allardyce knows all about how tough the Premier League is. Against United we created 19 chances - no goals. "I've watched them a lot from the stands and I'm really lucky that I still had the chance to get back if I did the right thing - and I've done that".
