Three people are dead and over a dozen injured after a Jeep sped through a crowd at a Billerica auto auction

Three people are dead and over a dozen injured after a Jeep sped through a crowd at a Billerica auto auction

Two people have life-threatening injuries, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said.

A preliminary investigation at Lynnway Auto Auction indicates that the Billerica crash was accidental, and authorities do not suspect foul play as there was no evidence of an attack.

Massachusetts State Police confirmed there were fatalities and said there was no evidence the crash was intentional. At the time of the accident, several hundred people were in the building.

One man remains hospitalized with serious injuries.

A witness tells WCVB-TV that cars were lined up on the auction block when one vehicle suddenly accelerated.

"It was kind of chaos, but people there at the auction, they really started organizing everything immediately", said Eduard Fandunyan of Sevan Auto Group.

The news conference that was recently held revealed that a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which was on standby and preparing to get into the auto auction event, unexpectedly accelerated.

Otto Warmbier, a University of Virginia student, was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in 2016 for removing a political sign. He is the second U.S. professor teaching at Pyongyang University of Science and Technology to be apprehended in recent months.

Fandunyan said he was two lanes over from the Jeep and walking out when he heard a boom.

The driver of the Jeep was an auction employee in his 70s, Ryan said. The vehicle struck several people in the crowd before crashing through a cinder block outer wall, law enforcement officials said in a press release. Her brother Orlando Aponte said she was a mother of three and was killed on her first day working at LynnWay.

Lowell General Hospital confirms one patient from the Billerica crash was still there Thursday morning after treating and releasing seven other patients Wednesday. He was not been taken to the hospital as of early Wednesday afternoon, the district attorney said.

Randy Miller of Manchester, N.H., who was also attending the auction, said it appeared the vehicle was traveling about 40 miles per hour.

Investigators said they don't know yet exactly what caused the driver to accelerate.

"This is a disgusting accident, " said Billerica Fire Chief Thomas Conway.
