Weather service investigators planned to visit Friday to determine whether the damage was caused by a tornado.

The tornado caused minimal damage near the Turning Tide Road area of Moneta.

"There was some property damage but thankfully no one got hurt", Sheriff Dwayne Goodwin told the Chowan Herald.

The tornado touched down just a few miles on the other side of the lake from Bridgewater Plaza. "It was loud - blew our roof off".

The National Weather Service had a tornado watch in effect for 43 counties in central and eastern North Carolina until late Friday morning.
