Egyptian woman leaves Indian hospital more than 300 kg lighter

Eman Ahmed

She weighed a whopping 498 kg on her arrival here in February this year.

The manner of Ms Ahmed's departure after three months in Mumbai's Saifee Hospital has caused public anger and demands for introspection by both the media and the doctors who treated her.

What's more, though her chances of walking again were said to be poor because of her weakened bone structure, doctors claimed that she was the healthiest that she has ever been and that she was in higher spirits and enjoyed listening to music.

"She looks happy after a long time". The minister yesterday instructed officials to prepare a note in this regard so that it could be issued to all hospitals. Likewise, BJP leader Shaina NC was also present. "However, I have confidence in her own ability to heal and we will always wish her the best in our hearts", he said.

Health Minister Deepak Sawant has said that there is a need to have a standard operating procedure (SOP) that would help in preventing controversies in the future.

McDonald's new 'frork' is an amazingly new 'uselessly useful' utensil
I mean, sure... maybe! Unfortunately, for those wanting to get their hands on this, the Frork is only available in the US. McDonald's says it will give away 100,000 of them to people who buy the new burgers starting May 5.

It began when her sister, Shaimaa Selim, released a short video on social media alleging that her sister was still unable to speak or move, and had not lost as much weight as the hospital was claiming. "It was necessary to confirm that everything is in order", Shaina NC said.

Abd El Aty's family could not be reached for comment by Reuters after news of her transfer broke.

Despite her great advances, Ahmed, 37, still need to go through additional treatment. Her genetic tests had showed that she has a rare gene mutation that can not be cured through surgery. She had a stroke when she was 11, after which her weight gradually increased. Besides this operation, she will undertake physiotherapy for one year at the VPS Burjeel hospital, based in Abu Dhabi. Eman's sister Shaimaa had earlier alleged that Eman did not receive proper treatment at Saifee, the charge which Dr Lakdawala and others at the Mumbai hospital denied. In cases like these, water loss leads to weight loss, says Dr. Lakdawala, and a litre of water lost equals about 1.5 kg of weight lost.

Abd El Aty was put on a special liquid diet in India to reduce her weight enough so that doctors could perform bariatric surgery. Her new home against a backdrop of swathes of sand that lies still and silent yet perpetually moving has nearly become a metaphor for the 36-year-old and her incredible journey in cranes, planes and trucks from Alexandria to Mumbai+ to Abu Dhabi while she remained caged in her body.
