Over-50s on Turner Prize shortlist after age limit scrapped

And though The Turner Prize is awarded to a British artist for an "outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work", this year's shortlist of four is the most multicultural and worldwide in some time - perhaps ever.

A key figure of the Black Arts Movement and Professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire in the north west of England, Lubaina Himid, 62, is the third shortlisted artist.

The 2017 Turner Prize shortlist, announced today, 3 May, immediately reflected the Tate's recent decision to lift the age limit of the shortlisted artists.

His stand-out piece, from the Hurvin Anderson: Dub Versions exhibition at New Art Exchange, Nottingham, Is It Okay To Be Black?, features portraits of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King in a barber's shop.

British painter Hurvin Anderson is 52, and Lubaina Himid, who was born in Zanzibar, is 62.

Two artists over 50 are among finalists for the prestigious Turner Prize, famed for launching the careers of Damien Hirst and other members of the "Young British Artists" generation. The victor of the £25,000 prize money will be announced at the Ferens Gallery in Hull on 5 December. The GSA has supplied no fewer than four prize winners since 2005, and many more graduates have been shortlisted for the frequently controversial competition over the years.

The jury said: "Anderson references the creativity and visibility of Blackness with contemporary society, paying homage to his cultural and political forebears while also contributing to discussions about the legacy of painting".

Opposition alleges "widespread fraud" in Turkish referendum vote
CHP party leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu also accused the electoral board of bias and favoring Erdogan's party. Council of Europe observers say those irregularities could have changed the outcome of the vote.

German artist Buettner works in woodcuts, prints, sculpture and video. Another work, Cotton.com, imagined conversations between the cotton workers of Lancashire and the slaves of SC.

She is nominated for an exhibition in California that included the film Electrical Gaza, which used live footage and animation to investigate everyday life in Gaza. Turner judges described him as "an outstanding British painter whose art speaks to our current political moment with questions about identity and belonging".

Nashashibi was born in Croydon, south London, to Irish-Palestinian parents.

The jury said they were impressed by the "depth and maturity" of her work, which "often examines sites of human occupation and the coded relationships that occur within those spaces".

In 2003, she was the first female recipient of the now discontinued Beck's Futures prize, which came with an even bigger cash amount than the Turner.

The works of the shortlisted artists will be displayed at Ferens Art Gallery in the northern English city of Hull, as part of the city's activities as this year's City of Culture.
