Nissan Fights Distracted Driving With Faraday Cage Armrest

Nissan has come up with a center compartment that can help prevent distracted driving called the Nissan Signal Shield.

Alex Smith, managing director at Nissan Motor GB, said: "Mobile phone use at the wheel is a growing concern across the automotive industry, and indeed society, particularly with the high number of "pushed" communications, such as texts, social media notifications and app alerts that tempt drivers to reach for their devices".

On Monday, the company announced Signal Shield, an armrest outfitted as a Faraday Cage.

Called the "Signal Shield", the concept is mounted in the armrest of a Nissan Juke, which is covered in conductive wire mesh material to block all cellular, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections.

Conservatives back revised health bill, GOP moderates balk
He had to abruptly cancel a vote on an initial version of the bill because of opposition from moderates and conservatives alike. The change would allow states to scrap what the caucus described as the "cost driving aspects" of Obamacare.

Nissan has developed a new prototype compartment that can actively block all incoming and outgoing messages on your mobile phone in an effort to reduce deadly driver distractions.

Nissan happily admits drivers could achieve a similar effect by simply switching their phone off, but given that statistics indicate phone use behind the wheel is on the rise, this is a decision few would seem to be making. Nissan didn't go into many details, but we guess music content needs to be saved directly on the smartphone, so no streaming while driving, friends. For years, automakers have integrated technologies that make it easier to use a phone without actually wielding the device. Once you open the lid, the cellular or other wireless connections are automatically re-established and the phone could be connected to the car's Bluetooth system.

Technology from the 1830s is being used to help prevent one of the most modern causes of vehicle crashes, as Nissan creates a Faraday cage to stop a driver's smartphone from working while they are behind the wheel. Nissan's own figures show that one in five drivers has texted while driving - which is not only forbidden, but it's also seriously unsafe. This is about delivering more control at the wheel, not less. Right now, this is just a concept idea for the new Nissan Juke model. However, it will put the driver off the grid and they won't be available on the phone if there's an emergency.
