TV shows to continue after writers reach early morning deal

What seemed like an inevitable writers strike in Hollywood has been avoided, as the studios and writers union reached a tentative agreement late last night.

This is the second time in a decade that the issue has been raised, while the 2007-2008 writers' strike had disastrous effects on Hollywood.

Guild members voted overwhelmingly last month to authorise a strike, and the WGA could have called for an immediate walkout on Tuesday. Writers complained they were constrained by exclusivity clauses, preventing many from working on more than one show per season.

It had been festering for a while now, the negations over new contracts between the Writers Guild of America and major studios, with the threat of a strike looming over head, but thankfully we can all now rest easy.

The tl;dr of it all is: the conditions for writers working on US film and TV series will improve, the union will not be going on strike, and the coming entertainment season won't be affected.

Short seasons of eight, 10 or 12 episodes mean less pay for writers who are paid on a per-episode basis.

The previous writers' strike occurred almost 10 years ago and gradually took a wider toll on Hollywood TV and movie production and the California economy.

Guild leaders have argued that entertainment companies and executives have been raking in money while writers' compensation continues to languish, especially for the most junior staff writers. Writers took to social media to make their case. You'll recall that in 2007 a strike DID occur and billions in revenue was lost.

"I think they made a very good deal", said Patrick Verrone, former WGA president and member of the negotiation committee, coming out of the AMPTP's Sherman Oaks offices close to 1 AM PT on Tuesday. Stars including Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tina Fey joined picket lines, and then-"Tonight Show" host Jay Leno brought doughnuts for strikers.

So, as many of you may have heard, there was impending writers' strike on the horizon, with writers demanding things such as improved health care, parental leave and overtime, as well as an increase in residuals - among other things.

With the ballot authorising a strike last week and with no deal finalised by yesterday, the WGA's negotiating team reportedly pushed that it was ready and willing to deploy its members in a massive industrial action, with a new deal brokered in the early hours of the morning.
