Trump won't get House OK of health bill before his 100th day

The measure keeps federal spending at current levels and prevents a shutdown of many parts of the federal government on Saturday, Trump's 100th day in office.

President Donald Trump holds up a replica flintlock rifle awarded him by cadets during the Republican Society Patriot Dinner at the Citadel Military College on February 22, 2015 in Charleston, South Carolina. "And our federal agencies even under President Trump can not plan their operations when they don't know whether they have money for programs, even next month". Trump has proposed a $30 billion spending hike for the Pentagon for the rest of this fiscal year.

"We are never going to shut government down". "However, this is our best path forward". "I think everybody is trying very hard". "This could have been avoided".

The Senate passed the measure Friday by voice vote without opposition after the House earlier approved the spending bill with large bipartisan support.

Congress has been tied in knots over $1 trillion in spending priorities for months.

Matthew Fielder, a fellow at the Brookings Institution, this week published new analysis that said the McArthur Amendment, named after Rep. Tom McArthur (R-N.J.), would charge sick people much more for coverage and deplete the insurance risk pool of healthy people.

The bill provides federal funding through May 5, allowing lawmakers to hammer out legislation in the coming days to keep the government funded for the rest of the fiscal year ending September 30. Party leaders made that decision after spending all day pressuring moderate GOP lawmakers to back that bill, but fell short of the votes they'd need to prevail. Most of the core decisions about agency budgets have been worked out, but unrelated policy issues - such as a Democratic request to help the cash-strapped government of Puerto Rico with its Medicaid burden - are among the hold-ups. While Trump dropped his demands for border wall money, the president is expected to claim victory over the extra Pentagon money in the final package.

The only shot that got past Nashville goaltender Pekka Rinne was an artful deflection by Alexander Steen in the second period. Nashville scored two power-play goals, which turned out to be the difference in the opening game of the series.

Lawmakers cleared the measure easily and Trump signed it with just hours to spare before the shutdown deadline at midnight.

Centrist Republicans were the primary target of lobbying by the White House and GOP leaders. Fifty or so times they voted unsuccessfully to end it. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va.; and other coal-state lawmakers. Health-care for the miners, however, appears to be on track. Now moderates are refusing to approve the plan because it allows states to cut insurance coverage for people with pre-existing conditions.

House Democrats had threatened to oppose the extension unless House Republicans backed off of having a Friday or Saturday vote on the revised American Health Care Act.

Still, Republican leaders are hoping enough of their colleagues can be persuaded to get on board with the measure as a result of the new amendment.

The House won't vote on a reworked health care overhaul until at least next week, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., told reporters late Thursday.

In the bigger spending bill to be negotiated in the coming days, it remained unclear whether Republicans would prevail in their effort to sharply boost defense spending without similar increases for other domestic programs. "I said, 'Has to be'". And unfortunately the president stood in the way for quite a long time.

But he offered a word of caution: "Now, there's always next week".
