Temple's Reddick Goes from Walk-on to First Round Pick

Arizona Cardinals' first-round draft pick Haason Reddick speaks after being introduced at the teams' training facility Friday

The most notable one, of course, is that Haason Reddick has emerged as the clear favorite for the Colts in mock drafts, with no other player within 16% of him on this pie chart. Reddick, a former walk-on defensive back for Temple, has since added some 40-plus pounds of muscle to his frame in order to develop into a featured pass rusher on the Owls' front seven. He had 22.5 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks last season. Mariucci was a long time National Football League assistant as well the head coach at the University of California-Berkeley and for parts of eight seasons in the National Football League with the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions.

"I wasn't really given a chance to show what I could offer the team", Reddick said.

The Cardinals indeeded bolstered their defense in the first round of the draft. "But, I'm an Arizona Cardinal".

Still, he was only a possible first-round pick until stellar performances at the Senior Bowl and combine caught everyone's attention.

Reddick was the 13th selection in the 2017 NFL Draft, the fourth first round pick in Temple history joining John Rienstra (1986, 9th overall), Paul Palmer (1987, 19th overall), and Muhammad Wilkerson (2011, 30th overall). He might get brought along slowly in a talented Arizona defense, but Reddick could earn a starting role right away if the Cardinals don't turn back to the recently reinstated Daryl Washington.

Cardinals general manager Steve Keim said Reddick is "one of the very best stories in this draft when you talk about a guy who has overcome adversity". A high school injury sidelined him at a critical time.

Daniel Jeremiah, an NFL Network analyst who used to be an Eagles scout, said Reddick "wasn't highly regarded coming into the [2016] season", and that's why he was off so many scouts' respective radars. I don't want to wake up yet.

You think you're jaded. "I mean, that was attractive". Reddick could spend his career caught in between positions, especially if covering backs and tight ends proves too challenging for someone who demonstrated a decent ability to drop into zones at the college level, but was rarely stressed vertically or asked to chase receivers laterally across the field.

"When I had the visit out there, I felt nothing but genuine love, especial from B.A.", Reddick said. His stock soared at the Senior Bowl and during the combine, when he impressed nearly everybody who took the time to get close enough to him. Whatever position I ever played, I always tried to do my best at it. But he'll need to become a better tackler if he's going to be more than a two-down linebacker in the pros.
