The 2016 fiscal year numbers are in for Sony, and it appears as though the PS4 has shipped 20 million units to retailers over the 12-month period that runs from April 1, 2016 to March 31, 2017.

Sales and income from Sony's gaming division continued to grow year-over-year to 1.649 trillion yen (~$14.81 billion USD) and 135.6 billion yen (~$1.217 billion USD), respectively.

The company said PS4 software sales, including sales through its PlayStation network, also increased during 2016. Last year, the company reported 294.2 billion yen in operating income and 8,105.7 billion in revenue.

These are the words of Kenichiro Yoshida: "PS VR and PS4 Pro, which went on sale last fall, both continue to sell well, which demonstrates the achievements we made when launching new products in fiscal 16".

It's nothing but good news in Sony's latest financial results, as total sales for the PlayStation 4 approach the 60 million mark. They announced that they have shipped 2.9 million PS4 units in the past three months.

Sony is now celebrating another huge sales milestone, as the PS4 ships 60 million units worldwide.

Sony has struggled through a painful restructuring that has included layoffs and asset sales after years of huge losses.

As it stands, Sony isn't expecting to repeat that performance in the next financial year, but is still hopeful of selling another 18 million consoles by the time FY17 draws to a close on March 31, 2018. There is cause for optimism, however - as Reuters reports, the company expects profits to rise 73.2 percent in the next financial year.

However, the rest of Sony's business is stuttering, with the mobile division revenue dropping by almost a third, various factors including exchange rates and the Kumamoto natural disaster causing their camera sensors business to dropping a similar amount.

Meanwhile, music publishing, which includes Sony/ATV, Sony Music Japan's publishing and, for operating profit, a portion of EMI Music Publishing results, for the year, declined 6.6 percent to $594 million (66.54 billion yen) from $631 million (71.3 billion yen). It has already sold some assets, including its Vaio personal computer business.
