PFAW Statement on Appointment of Anti-Choice Activist Charmaine Yoest as HHS Assistant Secretary

Charmaine Yoest, who actively supported Trump in his campaign, will serve as assistant secretary of public affairs at HHS.

In an address to the radically anti-choice and anti-LGBTQ World Congress of Families, which at the time was led by her mother, right-wing activist Janice Shaw Crouse, Yoest touted AUL's success in passing anti-abortion laws and described their work as akin to the struggles of abolitionists and leaders of the civil rights movement, framing it as the modern civil rights and social justice fight against the "culture of death".

Yoest, formerly president and CEO of the law firm Americans United for Life, is now a senior fellow at American Values, a conservative group that on its website laments America's "culture of death".

Yoest's contributions have been key to conservative strategies to claim abortion restrictions are meant to protect women's health.

While responding to Trump's comments bragging that he sexually assaults women and can get away with it because he's famous, she said that liberals have no business criticizing him since they don't ever complain about "Beyoncé and Jay-Z, who have lyrics that are replete with this kind of vulgarity".

Friend behind bars says Hernandez hinted he might kill himself
Army said his client could be released as early as February. " These are malicious leaks used to tarnish somebody who is dead ". In other developments, a MA judge scheduled arguments on a request to vacate Hernandez's conviction in the Lloyd case.

Perhaps most disturbingly, Yoest insisted to Bazelon that abortion causes breast cancer, an out-of-nowhere claim disputed by several dozen studies and the top institutions in both cancer research and women's health.

"As we're moving forward at the state level, we end up hollowing out [Roe v. Wade] even without the Supreme Court", Yoest told The New York Times in 2012. In her new role, she will set communications strategy for the entire health department.

By tapping Yoest, the Trump administration sends a clear signal that it plans to use HHS to restrict reproductive rights as much as possible, no matter how much money that will cost taxpayers. Yoest succeeds Kevin Griffis, who was recently named Planned Parenthood's vice president of communications.

Yoest worked in the Reagan White House and was a senior adviser to former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's 2008 presidential campaign.

"Trump has broken almost all of his promises to the American people in his first 100 days, but he has certainly stuck to his pledge to erode the constitutional right to abortion, punishing women in the process", Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, said in a statement Friday.
