Relay for Life ready with weather backup plan

Activities at this year's Relay for Life include music, games, challenges, survivors' lap and caregivers' lap on the track, a balloon release and more.

Alex Kaiser, the chair of the Relay for Life committee, said she was informed that St. John's reached its $1 million mark at 4:08 p.m. on Thursday, April 20.

Lynn Husted, who is coordinating the Relay For Life for Lamar County, said the Sumrall High Football Field will be full.

Relay For Life represents the hope that those who have lost their lives to cancer, will never be forgotten, that those who face the cancer will always be supported and that one day we will live in a cancer free world. Team photos will be taken beginning right after they complete their laps, around 11 a.m., and will be staged at the bandstand on the courthouse square.

This year's event, Connect4aCure, has a fundraising goal of $33,000. In keeping with this year's western "Give Cancer the Boot" theme, this fun event recognizing and celebrating survivors will be hosted from 5:30 p.m.to 7:30 p.m.at Hart Hall - located inside Hart Park at 24151 Newhall Ave, Santa Clarita.

Other items for sale to benefit the Relay for Life are the luminaries. Cancer research is the number one use of the money raised. She said past year "definitely acted as a motivator" for both the Relay for Life Committee and SGI. "I think the fact that this event calls for advocacy for all different kinds of cancer not just breast cancer, not just colon cancer, but all types and that's a really big deal".

You may have noticed events across the area posting inspirational messages on social media, and the organization is encouraging all to participate.
