White House to name new Secret Service director

First on CNN New Secret Service director expected to be named

President Donald Trump on April 25 announced the appointment of a senior border control official to serve as the new director of the Secret Service.

Alles led CBP's Air and Marine Operations after retiring from the Marine Corps as a two-star general in 2011.

And there have also been persistent problems guarding the White House, with the most recent coming when a man scaled the fence and wandered the White House grounds for some 17 minutes before being apprehended.

Selecting an outsider would be a big shift for the insular agency, which has long promoted its leaders through the ranks.

The appointment comes as the Secret Service has faced criticism over a breach at the White House complex.

National Football League notebook: Saints, Peterson reportedly nearing deal
The embattled running back is "closing in on" signing a deal with the New Orleans Saints, according to NFL Network . For now, it looks like the Saints won't be completing a trade with the New England Patriots to acquire Butler.

Alles' larger charge, though, will be to address structural weaknesses that have shaken the confidence of some in the White House Congress. Morale among Secret Service employees has sunk lower than among those of any other federal agency, according to government surveys. "I look forward to working with General Alles to help him succeed in his new role". He inherits an agency that has been dealing with a series of security and personnel issues.

Alles will be replacing Secret Service deputy director William Callahan, who has been leading the agency for the past two months since former director Joseph Clancy resigned in February.

Clancy guided the 151-year-old agency through that period and during the intense 2016 presidential campaign, and his decision to step aside allowed Trump to pick his own director. Agents were reportedly bracing for the change, expecting that Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly would recommend a former general for the position.

The Secret Service director does not need to be confirmed by the Senate.
