North Korea marks military anniversary with firing drill

Workers' Party newspaper Rodong Sinmun stated in an editorial Tuesday its army has the capacity to "respond to any war the United States wants", and that the "era of the US imperialist's nuclear terror has ended forever", because North Korea has developed its own nuclear capacity.

"He's not going to let this nut-job in North Korea develop a missile with a nuclear weapon on top to hit America", Graham said, referring to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

In an unusual move, the entire US Senate has been asked to attend a briefing on North Korea on Wednesday at the White House.

North Korea on Tuesday marked the 85th founding anniversary of its military with a massive live fire drill in an apparent show of force amid tensions over Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programmes.

All 100 US senators will gather Wednesday for a White House briefing on the volatility in North Korea.

The most recent test launch failed on the Day of the Sun, marking founder Kim Il-sung's birth earlier this month, when his grandson viewed new weapons in a huge military parade.

The military buildup on both sides comes amid heightened tensions over North Korea's nuclear and missile programs, and warnings from the Trump administration that "all options are on the table" for dealing with the regime in Pyongyang.

The drill was conducted near the city of Wonsan on the North's eastern coast, according to the South Korean military.

His minister of defence General Pak Yong Sik told the event that the country is ready to use pre-emptive strikes or any other measures it deems necessary to defend itself against the "US imperialists".

South Korea's envoy for North Korea, Kim Hong-kyun, said he and his Japanese and American counterparts have agreed to "maximise pressure" to prevent further provocations.

The Ohio-class, nuclear-powered submarine sailed into Busan for what the Navy said was a routine visit during a regularly scheduled deployment to the western Pacific.

Washington has sent the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson to the Korean peninsula, where it is expected to arrive - after a derision-provoking delay - later this week.

"We believe China has a very, very important role to play", said the USA envoy for North Korea policy, Joseph Yun.

Despite its longstanding ties with the North, China has stepped up pressure, announcing in February that it was halting all imports of coal from North Korea - a crucial earner for Pyongyang - for the rest of the year.

Mr Trump impressed North Atlantic Treaty Organisation partners with the move - which is backing a campaign of support for Baltic states on the borders of Russian Federation.

"The joint exercise is to show USA and South Korea's strong will to retaliate and its firm defense posture against North Korea's provocative threat", it added.

Chinese President Xi Jinping called Monday for "restraint" regarding North Korea in a telephone conversation with Trump.

Mr Trump on Monday urged UN Security Council ambassadors to consider stronger sanctions against Pyongyang, and U.S. senators will be briefed on North Korea at the White House on Wednesday.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have heightened amid concerns about a possible pre-emptive strike against Pyongyang by the USA to counter its provocative acts, Yonhap news agency reported. The reasons for the detention of Tony Kim, who taught accounting at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, weren't immediately clear.

"North Korea's a big world problem, and it's a problem we have to finally solve".

Until now, the allies have worked with the United Nations to impose sanctions against North Korea following its nuclear and ballistic missile tests.
