Trump called astronaut Peggy Whitson to congratulate her on setting a new American record for cumulative time spent in space.

Other participants of the call were NASA astronauts Jack Fischer and Kate Rubins and First daughter, Ivanka Trump. Whitson said the International Space Station is providing a "key bridge from us doing- living on Earth to going somewhere into deep space".

President Trump then said: "What do you see a timing for actually sending humans to Mars?".

"I'm glad to hear that", Trump replied.

"Better you than me", Trump deadpanned in response.

By the time she returns to Earth in September, she will have logged 666 days in orbit over three flights.

Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka, who has spent 879 days on orbit in total, now holds the world record for the number of cumulative days in space.

All the little girls out there who dream of flying through space one day have a new hero they can look up to - record-breaking astronaut Peggy Whitson.

President Donald Trump's congratulatory call with phenomenal USA astronaut Peggy Whitson took a turn for the awkward when the subject changed to urine.

Murray tried to be philosophical about it afterwards: 'I'm disappointed to lose from the position that I was in, ' he admitted. Murray, 29, was playing his first tournament since being beaten in the second round at Indian Wells in March.

Behind her, a banner read: "Congrats Peggy!"

Whitson's 20-minute call with President Donald Trump was aired live on NASA Television and streamed on the agency's website and Facebook page at 10 a.m. ET.

Whitson graduated high school right around the time that NASA selected its first female astronauts. This is her third long-duration stay on the space station.

Commander Whitson replied: "I think as your bill directed it will be approximately in the 2030s" adding "Getting there will require some global cooperation to get it to be a planet-wide approach in order to make it successful".

The debut of the mega rocket is still more than a year away-at least.

But Trump had some qualms about life aboard the space station.

"Who's ready to go to Mars up there?"

"That's fantastic", Mr Trump said.

Ivanka Trump took the opportunity to talk about the INSPIRE Women Act, which seeks to get more female students interested in science and math. Whitson, 57, is a biochemist who has twice commanded the International Space Station. "I'm so much more impressed with these people, you have no idea", he said.
