NYC Mayor Challenges Trump, Sessions On Crime

A Republican lawmaker in NY who is challenging Mayor Bill de Blasio's sanctuary city policy may be considering running against his re-election bid. "You take an oath of office to enforce the federal law in the state of NY and the City of NY". "Come here to New York City and look our officers in the eye and tell them you believe they're soft on crime, see how that feels, see how the people in New York City will feel about that". It is an outrageous statement and it's absurd on its face.

New York City's mayor and U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions are battling over a Department of Justice statement accusing the city of being "soft on crime". The NYPD recently chose to defy de Blasio's 2014 sanctuary city law by notifying immigration officials of illegal immigrants' upcoming court appearances.

"I'd like to think of myself as a pretty calm and measured person, but when I read that statement by DOJ this afternoon, my blood began to boil", he said during the press conference.

O'Neill also denounced the claim, calling it "unbelievably disrespectful". According to the NYPD, overall crime within the city has decreased 76 percent since 1993.

The statement was part of an ongoing dispute between Republican President Donald Trump and cities including NY over immigration policy, with the Trump administration threatening to crack down on so-called sanctuary cities that refuse to comply with federal immigration authorities.

Rep. Ed Henry declares candidacy for Alabama's U.S. Senate seat
Bentley in February frustrated some of his GOP colleagues by appointing odd , then Alabama's attorney general, to Sessions' U.S. Senate seat that was vacated when Sessions became the nation's attorney general under President Donald Trump's administration.

New York City was one of the areas which received the letter, which targeted the sanctuary cities as "crumbling under the weight of illegal immigration and violent crime".

It's an odd statement, considering the DOJ is threatening to take away the department's grant money to make a political point. Birmingham, in Sessions' home state of Alabama, had 104 murders previous year amidst an ongoing spike in violence in the city, even though New York City is 40 times its size.

New York City's lone Congressional Republican, Representative Dan Donovan, criticized the practices of sanctuary cities, but also wrote that the NYPD made New York the safest big city in America.

"The bottom line", Malliotakis concluded, "is that he's putting people who are committing crimes against the very citizens that elected him to keep them safe".
