What sanctuary cities stand to lose if feds have their way

"Y$3 our jurisdiction is required to submit documentation to OJP that validates that your jurisdiction is in compliance with 8 U.S.C. 1373, which states that 'a Federal, State, or local government entity or official may not prohibit, or in anyway restrict, any government entity or official from sending to, or receiving from, the Immigration and Naturalization Service information regarding the citizenship or immigration status, lawful or unlawful, of any individual.'"

State corrections officials issued a brief statement saying the Board of State and Community Corrections is reviewing the letter, and that it "complies" with the federal law referenced in the Justice Department letter. Friday's letters warn officials they must provide proof from an attorney that they are following the law or risk losing thousands of dollars in federal grant money that police agencies use to pay for anything from body cameras to bulletproof vests.

Still, if the jurisdictions fail to prove they are in full compliance, they could lose the Office of Justice Programs Byrne JAG grant, which provides funding for personnel, training, and equipment, among other things.

The letters were also sent to officials in Chicago, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Miami, Milwaukee, New York City and Sacramento, Calif., as well as Cook County, Ill.

They were highlighted in a May 2016 report by the Justice Department's inspector general that found they have policies or rules that interfere with information-sharing among local law enforcement and immigration agents.

He says the Trump administration's grandstanding is out of touch with reality.

Mexican ex-governor evaded justice with help of accomplices
The party, which expelled Javier Duarte on October 25, 2016, and has sought to distance itself from him, applauded the arrest. Lawyer Rodrigo Sandoval waits outside Guatemala City's Matamoros prison, to visit Mexico's former Veracruz state Gov.

The grant the Justice Department would yank from cities like NY is the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant, which gives local police departments funding for a range of programs.

"Neither the facts, nor the law are on their side", the mayor said.

He rejected the Trump administration's statements linking crime and illegal immigration.

The Trump administration has intensified threats to crack down on so-called sanctuary cities that refuse to comply with federal immigration authorities. That's a sad irony since the reason "sanctuary city" policies exist is to encourage otherwise law-abiding undocumented immigrants to feel safe reporting crimes and interacting with officers.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has increasingly warned the administration will punish communities that refuse to cooperate with efforts to find and deport immigrants in the country illegally. Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo, the elected head of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, said the city and county were wrongly labeled sanctuary cities.

Butterworth also says New Orleans police have no means or authority to enforce immigration laws or hold someone suspected of violating them.
