This bipartisan legislation comes three years after the scandal in which our country was shocked to learn that dozens of veterans died while waiting for appointments at the Phoenix VA. A "quick fix." It does not adequately address the wait list manipulation that is rampant in VA clinics.
The program offers a choice to qualifying veterans that lets them see private doctors if they want to bypass the VA's medical care system.
Dr. Phil Roe, (R-TN) released the following statement after President Trump signed The Veterans Choice Program Improvement Act. He said those appointments would have otherwise "lagged" in the VA scheduling system.
"Using funds that have already been appropriated for this program, this gives our nation's heroes the peace of mind they deserve while this administration works with Congress to enact comprehensive reform and modernization at the VA", White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said.
The Choice program was developed after a 2014 scandal over wait times at the VA medical center in Phoenix.

While the HTC U Ultra is no slouch, the HTC U looks like it ought to be a bit higher-end thanks to its Snapdragon 835 processor. The fingerprint sensor is also seen on the front of the device, complete with its offset placement on the bottom bezel.
The president signed S. 544 on Wednesday, which was passed by the Senate and House earlier this month.
Shulkin has made clear he'd like a broader collaboration of "integrated care" nationwide between the VA and private sector in which veterans have wider access to private doctors.
VA Secretary David Shulkin said the measure was an example of "how we are making things better" for veterans. No veteran should worry they won't be able to get the care they need. Our veterans should feel confident in the large network of providers both inside and outside VA facilities that are dedicated to their needs. Increasing access and availability of care is crucial.
Yehia says the VA has issued a request for proposals to streamline how it buys care from non-VA providers across the board. "We are working to leverage technology to share important clinical information and ensure care continuity". Jerry Moran wrote in an opinion piece on FoxNews.com.
