North Korean mock-up birthday video shows missiles blowing up US

A full orchestra played the music to accompany the video, which depicts North Korean missiles soaring over the Pacific to engulf the US west coast in flames.

Official sources from South Korea and the USA confirmed North Korea had attempted to launch a missile on Sunday, but had failed. "The move is a delusion aiming to stifle us", the website said on Thursday (20 April). North Korea routinely labels such exercises preparations for invasion. Frontrunner Moon Jae-in was criticized for leaving his options open before the May 9 election. For its part, China says the system's powerful radar is a threat to its security.

North Korea has a long history of portraying the mock violent demise of the United States in animated videos, usually released to mark national holidays.

North Korea has conducted a series of ballistic missile launches in recent months in defiance of United Nations sanctions and concerns have been growing that it could soon conduct a sixth nuclear test after carrying out two previous year.

Such statements need to be agreed by all the 15 members of the council, Reuters noted.

38 North last week said Punggye-ri was "primed and ready" to conduct its sixth nuclear test, possibly to coincide with last Saturday's celebrations marking the birthdate of regime founder Kim Il-Sung. It also stated that Pyongyang's ballistic missile launches are "illegal" and that the country has been developing nuclear weapons. However, this time the statement reportedly dropped "through dialogue" from the draft, which Russian Federation had insisted it be included, according to Reuters.

The U.S. military's Pacific Command explained that the USS Carl Vinson strike group first had to complete a shorter-than-planned period of training with Australia.

China's influential Global Times newspaper, which is published by the People's Daily, the Communist Party's official paper, wondered whether the confusion was deliberate.

"It suggests that the facility might be going into a standby mode", said Joseph Bermudez, a North Korea expert and an analyst for the Washington-based 38 North.

Without mincing words, the official newspaper of Pyongyang's ruling Workers' Party, the Rodong Sinmum warned that the USA and its regional allies like Japan and South Korea should not mess with Kim Jong-un's regime.

"In the case of our super-mighty preemptive strike being launched, it will completely and immediately wipe out not only USA imperialists' invasion forces in South Korea and its surrounding areas but the US mainland and reduce them to ashes", it said.
