Korea fires ballistic missile ahead of Trump-Xi meeting

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has welcomed US President Donald Trump's tough stance on North Korea and appreciated Washington's position of keeping all options open to deal with Pyongyang. A US statement said initial assessments indicate the type of missile was a KN-15 medium-range ballistic missile.

According to The Associated Press, a statement from South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missile had traveled about 60 kilometers (37 miles).

Hyten labeled the February launch of the KN-11 missile as "a major advancement" by North Korea because it was "a new solid medium range ballistic missile off a new transporter erector launcher". The use of solid-fuel missiles is a worrying development because the fuel already being inside the rocket shortens launch preparation times and make it harder for outsiders to detect what's happening before liftoff. If fired from the South's southernmost island of Jeju, the missile can reach Sinuiju, a North Korean city bordering China. Analysts were trying to determine if the shorter distance meant Wednesday's launch was a failure.

The Massachusetts Democrat's plan, outlined in a letter that was sent to Trump on the eve of his first meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, suggests that the USA should agree to direct talks with North Korea in exchange for China's commitment to drastically escalate sanctions against Pyongyang if they fail to negotiate in good faith. The missile launch may be a precursor, with more to come as the summit starts later this week, Cossa said.

"I've joked before that they don't mind being hated, but they definitely hate to be ignored", Ralph Cossa, president of the Pacific Forum CSIS think tank in Honolulu, said after Wednesday's launch.

SEOUL, South Korea North Korea rarely misses an opportunity to conduct a banned missile test to coincide with a high-profile world event that's expected to discuss the impoverished yet nuclear-armed country.

"The president emphasised that the United States stands with its allies Japan and South Korea in the face of the serious threat that North Korea continues to pose". North Korea could also have used its latest missile launch to show that it won't back down to pressures by the Trump administration.

"The market is only starting to factor in recent developments regarding North Korea, and it now wants to figure out the geopolitical implications of the U.S".

In a statement, the agency said: "U.S".

The Pentagon has tentatively scheduled for late May the next intercept test of its $36 billion ground-based missile defense system - the first in almost three years, according to a spokesman.

South Korea and the United States say the sole objective of the THAAD system is to defend against missile launches from North Korea but China says the system's powerful radar could penetrate into its territory. North Korea sees the drills as an invasion rehearsal. A USA statement said initial assessments indicate the type of missile was a KN-15 medium-range ballistic missile.
