Former President Barack Obama will take part in a discussion event with Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin next month as Germany marks the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, organizers said Tuesday.

Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel enjoyed a drink together during the former President's 2013 trip to Berlin.

The discussion is being organized jointly by the conference, which is held every two years, and the Obama Foundation.

They will discuss "shaping engaged democracy and taking responsibility at home and in the world" in front of the historic Brandenburg Gate, the officials with Germany's Protestant church said.

Obama was invited to Germany for the anniversary last May.

It will be a centrepiece of the biennial gathering of the church, which is this year focusing on commemorations of the Reformation, launched in 1517 when Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the door of Wittenberg Cathedral.

Obama was in Berlin in mid-November on his last European trip as president.

The Obama-Merkel appearance is expected to occur prior to President Trump's first meeting with Merkel overseas, at the Group of 20 summit in Hamburg in July, the Associated Press notes.

They office said May and Trump agreed that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's upcoming visit to Moscow this week will be an "opportunity to make progress towards a solution which will deliver a lasting political settlement".

Obama has not kept quiet about his successor as some past presidents have done.
