The Shockers have been a member of the Missouri Valley Conference since 1945.
Wichita State University's move from the Missouri Valley Conference to the American Athletic Conference isn't just about sports said WSU President John Bardo at a Friday afternoon announcement event on campus.
Wichita State has accepted the invitation. They haven't had one since 1986, and Navy is apart of the AAC simply as a football school.
The league unanimously approved the addition of the school to bolster its college basketball lineup to 12 teams, a person with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports.
The move makes sense in terms of basketball as well for the school that has made six straight NCAA tournament appearances, including two Sweet 16s and the 2013 Final Four. Creighton left the league for the Big East in 2013. It also helps financially as Wichita State's consistent bids in the NCAA tournament would help grow everyone's "piece of the pie" for tournament shares.
Wichita State used a five-run third inning to shut out Southern Illinois and begin conference play with a 7-0 victory.

The celebrations were muted at the finish line due to the enormous effort put in by both shades of blue. So the Dark Blues crossed the finish line in 16.59, for a winning margin of one-and-a-quarter lengths.
LaBarbera went on to expand on his answer as to whether or not it was a possibility for Valparaiso to move to a different conference should a school like Wichita State provide an opening.
Valparaiso now resides in the Horizon League, while the Racers are one the founding members of the Ohio Valley Conference back in 1948. Football-only Navy gives the league 12 members for football. "They want to compete against the best, because they ultimately want to be the best". It gives our league another elite team of national championship caliber and raises the profile of the American Conference to another level.
"We welcome Wichita State University to the American Athletic Conference", added East Carolina Athletics Director Jeff Compher, who also serves as the Chairman of the American AD's Committee.
AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco said he is pleased with his conference's expansion.
Two games against Wichita State are good for the RPI.
While the statement contained no mention of Sunday's meeting with the remaining presidents and athletic directors, multiple sources have confirmed that the conference intends to meet in St. Louis to discuss membership possibilities. This means that each of the 10 Valley schools are entitled to - and Wichita is sacrificing - a total of $635,661 before the MVC uses some of this money to cover its expenses. Cincinnati and Houston thought they were headed to the Big 12 a year ago, until the Big 12 chose to stay with 10 teams, an affront to mathematicians everywhere.
